Scituate High School has been named a 2024-2025 Distinguished High School by PLTW - Project Lead The Way for the second year in a row. This national recognition highlights the school’s continued commitment to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in STEM education and career readiness. Scituate is one of only five school districts in Rhode Island to have schools receiving this distinction.

“We are honored and proud to receive this recognition,” said Principal Michael Hassell. “To be named a Distinguished High School, we had to meet specific criteria, including offering a minimum number of PLTW courses and maintaining strong student enrollment in those courses.”

Scituate High School currently offers eight unique PLTW courses focused in three career and technical education academies: Biomedical Science, Computer Science, and Engineering. The courses engage students in topics such as human body systems, digital electronics, and civil engineering and architecture. Next year, the high school will expand its offerings to include a new course in Aerospace Engineering.

More than 32% of students at SHS are currently enrolled in a PLTW course, an increase from last year, when 30% of students were enrolled, showing growth in student interest and participation.

“We are proud to honor Scituate High School for their commitment to providing students with exceptional educational experiences through PLTW programs,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. "This achievement celebrates their dedication to student achievement and their focus on empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in school and a wide range of post-secondary opportunities."

According to PLTW, 92% of high school students have reported that their PLTW course made them more interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). PLTW programs also help prepare today’s students for the careers of tomorrow, not only incorporating STEM skills into their learning but also building students’ collaborative, teamwork, and communication skills so they can excel in whatever path they choose for their future.
